There are 3 aspects of community placemaking that we have focused our effort on – transportation, third spaces, and public art. We have been working with TransLink and local politicians to advocate for better transit in South Vancouver, and our efforts are recognized when then MLA Michael Lee brought our transit requests to Legislative Assembly in 2024, and when South Vancouver’s major transportation needs are reflected in TransLink’s Burrard Peninsula Area Transport Plan. As one of the stewards of the Sunset Plaza on Fraser and 48th, we have led annual celebrations and cultural events at the plaza in collaboration with the Sunset on Fraser BIA. We are also actively involved in the creation of a parklet on Fraser Street and a plaza on Victoria Drive.
We have activated Memorial South Park and its Pollinator Meadow through organizing neighbourhood workshops, gatherings, and advocacy. Through supporting racialized and Indigenous artists in our community, we created 4 murals in South Vancouver (2 at South Vancouver Family Place, 2 at South Vancouver Neighbourhood House), adding vibrancy and celebrating the diversity of our neighbourhood. In all these processes, we have ensured voices of our community are included. We believe that community knows best what they need, and our role is to bring their vision to reality.
